Each tab on this credit card-sized pack by American designers Bolt Group can be torn off and used as a USB stick.

The GIGS.2.GO pack by Bolt Group is made of recycled paper pulp and contains four tear-off tabs with a USB flash drive in each.

The concept was inspired by Bolt Group designers frequently having problems sharing presentation and CAD files with clients….

Though the drives are designed to last for many uses, the paper and electronic components can eventually be separated and recycled.

Fargo is a simple idea outliner, notepad, todo list, project organizer.

It’s an HTML 5 application, written in JavaScript, runs in any compatible browser, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Microsoft IE 10.

Files are stored in Dropbox. They are accessible anywhere Dropbox is. You can share files with other users, or publicly.

The HTML5 local storage in the browser/real files in Dropbox combo is a great idea. And, since Fargo outlines are plain old OPML files, they’ll work with all sorts of existing mobile and desktop outliners.

Think about it: How many “forever objects” do you really own? The computer I’m typing this on, that’ll be gone in a few years. My cell phone and camera will shortly be obsolete. The object I’ve owned longest is a metal Zippo lighter, but as I’m trying to quit smoking I hope to soon throw it into the recycling bin triumphantly. My hand tools and all-metal sewing machines will outlive me, but those are about it.

Bicycle racer and recent Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering grad Ian Schon wanted to create an object that he could use and carry for the rest of his life. Presumably a frequent sketcher, he struck upon the idea of creating a pen, and engaged in the sort of “pure” design process those of us working for organizations can only dream about: The pen’s form would be determined solely by Schon, and designed to fit his needs and tastes exactly (though he would later observe how others used it to willfully tweak the design). There were no focus groups, no selling to upper management, no meetings and no reviews. And it had to be manufacturable by the metal lathe he had sitting in his apartment, making the contracting process rather simple.

I like the concept of a “forever object,” but I wonder about the implications of creating one from scratch. It seems more unconsumption-y to think of ways to take a more forever attitude to what is at hand. Nevertheless, interesting food for weekend thought!
